MLB: Yankees secure $2.6B from Apollo Sports Capital

Apollo pumps $2.6 billion into the Yankees

The New York Yankees announced today that they are receiving $2.6 billion from the private equity fund Apollo Sports Capital. The cash flows to Yankee Global Enterprises, the holding company that runs the franchise and several other sports assets.

According to The Athletic, the Yankees will use the infusion to refinance or retire much of their existing debt and then chase new ventures. The move reshapes the balance sheet without changing who runs the team.

The Steinbrenners keep control

Hal Steinbrenner stays on as managing general partner, and the family retains full control of the club. That lineage traces back to 1973, when patriarch George Steinbrenner led an investor group that bought the Yankees from CBS for $10 million. George died in 2010. The franchise he bought for eight figures now sits near the top of the sport’s valuations. Forbes pegged the Yankees at $8.5 billion in March.

“We are continually seeking ways to strengthen our positioning, and this partnership allows us to explore pursuing strategic opportunities,” Hal Steinbrenner said in a release.

Rules, stakes and reach

Major League Baseball caps any single private equity fund at a 15 percent stake in a club, and the Yankees did not disclose the exact size of Apollo’s slice. The money can travel well beyond the diamond. Yankee Global Enterprises also owns the YES Network and holds stakes in MLS side New York City FC and Italian club AC Milan, all of which could tap the fresh capital.

Apollo brings scale to the table. Apollo Sports Capital is an arm of Apollo Global Management, a New York firm managing close to $1 trillion in assets. It already went big in soccer, becoming the majority stakeholder in Spanish power Atletico Madrid in 2025. Now it plants a flag in the Bronx.
