Football: UEFA, Concacaf and AFC push Infantino toward the exit

Three confederations go on the attack

One letter, three signatures, and a very public shove. UEFA, Concacaf and the AFC want Gianni Infantino gone, and they said so in an open letter on Monday, each organisation signing through its president and secretary general.

The FIFA boss has been taking fire for weeks. The spark was the FIFA Forward Enterprise plan floated last month, a scheme to hand private investors a slice of World Cup commercial rights and pull in billions. It fell apart.

Then came Morocco. A crisis meeting there last week only fanned the flames, largely because Infantino filled the room with a hand-picked set of board members rather than the full committee.

Governance under the microscope

The confederations did not soften their language. “This is not the conduct of someone protecting the game, but of someone who thinks the game owes him answers,” they wrote, before demanding transparency and accountability in the same breath.

U.S. Soccer ended its silence on Monday as well. Alongside Canada Soccer, the CFU and UNCAF, it lined up behind a single message: FIFA needs firmer governance, and it needs it now.

Infantino is not standing completely alone, mind you. Argentina and Mexico’s federations are still in his corner.

A power struggle before 2027

The 56-year-old Swiss has held FIFA’s top job since 2016, arriving there after seven years as UEFA general secretary from 2009. His mandate runs to 2027, when he intends to stand for another four years at the wheel.

The calendar makes it messier. This brawl is breaking out barely a year out from that vote, and football’s biggest regions are now airing their divisions in the open for everyone to see.
