WNBA: Valkyries hold off Sparks

A lead that nearly vanished

Nineteen points up. The Valkyries had it. Then almost gave the whole lot away.

Golden State hung on for an 84-78 win overnight on the Los Angeles Sparks’ floor. The California outfit makes it four straight and moves to 23 wins and 9 losses. Los Angeles, meanwhile, slips further back to 12-19.

Zandalasini catches fire

Cecilia Zandalasini kept things together. Fifteen points. Five three-point attempts, five makes. Perfect from beyond the arc.

No one had done that in Valkyries history. The Italian becomes the first player in franchise history to knock down at least five threes without missing one. Tiffany Hayes chipped in 14 to help see it through.

Los Angeles left with regrets

For the Sparks, there was still a chance. Nneka Ogwumike scored 16. Erica Wheeler added 15. It still wasn’t enough to pull them back in. The damage done early proved too much.
