A late hammer blow
The Arizona Diamondbacks knocked off the Dodgers in Phoenix on Friday, 4-3. The man of the moment was Ryan Waldschmidt. The rookie launched a two-run homer on the first pitch of the ninth inning. It travelled 411 feet to deep left-centre. It was only his second career blast, and his first walk-off.
It all came down to the final act. Max Kepler drew a walk off Edwin Diaz. Pinch-runner Jorge Barrosa swiped second. Waldschmidt did the rest with one swing.

Los Angeles keeps sliding
For the Dodgers, it was another night to forget. That makes it seven straight losses. The skid is starting to bite. Starter Roki Sasaki at least limited the damage: two runs and four hits in six innings.
Arizona leaned on its big names to get it done. Nolan Arenado also went deep. Geraldo Perdomo chipped in with a double, a triple and an RBI. Starter Merrill Kelly was even carrying a no-hitter through five innings. He left in the sixth with a right leg cramp after allowing two hits and one run.
What it means in the race
The result carries real weight. The Dodgers, usually glued to the top of the standings, are suddenly in unfamiliar trouble this late in the season. Every defeat makes the run-in that bit harder. Arizona, meanwhile, has landed a statement win against one of the National League heavyweights.
