A comeback out of nowhere
Down to their last outs, the Yankees found a way. New York erased a late deficit and beat the Atlanta Braves 3-2 in 10 innings on Friday night in the Bronx, snapping Atlanta’s eight-game winning streak after a rain delay of nearly two hours pushed back the first pitch.
Ryan McMahon settled it. His sacrifice fly to Ronald Acuna Jr. in the 10th brought home automatic runner Luis Garcia Jr., and Acuna’s offline throw removed any doubt. It was only New York’s fifth win in 47 games this season when trailing after eight innings.

A rookie sparks the rally
The Yankees were dead in the water until the ninth. Rookie George Lombard Jr. reached on an infield single and took an extra base on a two-base error by Raisel Iglesias. Austin Wells followed with an RBI double, and Ben Rice tied it with a single off the right field wall. Iglesias blew his third save in 27 tries.
David Bednar picked up the win, helped by Lombard’s off-balance throw on Sean Murphy’s grounder and Luis Garcia’s over-the-shoulder catch on Acuna to close the 10th.
Fried gets the better of his old club
Max Fried faced Atlanta for the first time since leaving as a free agent after the 2024 season, and he held his former team to three hits over 6 1/3 innings. The Braves broke through late. Austin Riley homered off Fernando Cruz in the eighth, his fifth long ball in 20 games since the All-Star break, and Matt Olson went deep off Tim Hill in the ninth for his 33rd, tying Kyle Schwarber and Hunter Goodman for the National League lead.
Atlanta had its own bright spot on the mound. Tyler Mahle, acquired from San Francisco on Sunday, struck out nine over six innings of three-hit ball in his debut, backed by a leaping catch from Mauricio Dubon on Spencer Jones in the fourth. It was not enough to keep the streak alive.
