WNBA: Liberty waive Laney-Hamilton, sign Fauthoux

End of the road in New York

Betnijah Laney-Hamilton’s time with the New York Liberty is over. The club waived the former All-Star on Thursday and handed a multiyear contract to French rookie guard Marine Fauthoux.

The split had been building. Laney-Hamilton, 32, last played for New York on July 12, when she was ejected after throwing a loose shoe belonging to Jonquel Jones into the back of Toronto’s Marina Mabrey, drawing a second technical. Coach Chris DeMarco said she was only trying to return the shoe to Jones. She then sat as a healthy scratch for eight straight games.

A champion moves on

Laney-Hamilton played a real part in the Liberty’s 2024 title, then missed all of 2025 with a knee injury and slipped down the rotation this year. She averaged 4.7 points in 17 games in 2026. The 2021 All-Star and 2020 Most Improved Player leaves with 251 WNBA games across five franchises.

Fauthoux, a 25-year-old from France, steps up from a developmental deal. She has averaged 4.5 points off the bench across 11 games in her rookie season.
