Fred Richard put himself in position to win his first national title. The Olympian surged to the front on night one of the U.S. Gymnastics Championships on Thursday, posting an all-around total of 84.326. Danila Leykin sits second at 84.173, and Shane Wiskus is third at 83.207.

The margin is thin. Richard leads Leykin by 0.153 heading into Saturday’s final session, a gap a single wobble can erase.

Richard anchored the 2024 U.S. team that won bronze in Paris, then missed both the national and world championship teams in 2025. He answered on Thursday, opening on parallel bars with a clean routine and holding the front the rest of the way.
