Fresh faces ready to step in right away
The 2026 draft class featured 257 players. Only a handful are expected to make an immediate impact. Opta picked out five rookies set to inherit jobs opened up by retirement, a trade or injury. Not necessarily the most gifted on paper, but the ones with the clearest path to snaps.
Kayden McDonald leads the way. The Houston Texans landed the interior defender at No. 36 out of Ohio State. He replaces veteran Denico Autry, who has retired. At 148 kilos and with a 29.9% run-stop rate, the best among drafted interior linemen this year, he looks built to plug the middle and free up Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter.

Big holes, little time
Antonio Williams arrives in Washington. The Clemson receiver is not pure rocket fuel, but he does have polish. His 78.1% separation rate should help an offence that had only Terry McLaurin producing at that level. Veteran Stefon Diggs, brought in this summer, will demand his share of targets, but Diggs is 33 and now on his fourth team in four years.
In Indianapolis, CJ Allen steps into the role left by Zaire Franklin, who was traded this summer. That is a heavy load for a second-round pick. His coverage is the concern, with one of the worst rates allowed among his draft class. Against the run, though, he stacks up well.
In Dallas, Caleb Downs fell right into the Cowboys’ lap at No. 11, a gift at that stage of the first round. The Texas back end ranked 30th before the draft. Downs can play anywhere, deep safety, in the box or in the slot. He should help cover up a secondary that has been leaking badly.
Seattle is banking on the run
The final name is Jadarian Price. The Seahawks took him with the last pick of the first round. Their ground game drove their Super Bowl push, but Kenneth Walker III has gone and Zach Charbonnet is coming back from a torn ACL.
Price leaves Notre Dame with 674 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2025, at 6 yards a carry. His calling card is simple: 0.345 missed tackles forced per touch, the best mark in the class. Seattle ran more than any other team last season. This rookie could be starting sooner than people think.
