Diallo finally breaks through on home turf in Montreal
Gabriel Diallo had been waiting a long time for this one. The Canadian beat Frenchman Kyrian Jacquet overnight in the first round of the National Bank Open, 6-7 (1), 6-3, 6-2. It was his first main-draw win at his home event.
The match was tight early on. Diallo dropped the opening set in a tiebreak, seven points to one. Then he found another gear. Two straight sets followed, driven by a forehand that caused Jacquet all kinds of problems.
The crowd at IGA Stadium backed their man for almost two hours. Diallo grew up in Villeray, just minutes from the court. He was playing at home, literally.

A 50th on tour, and a milestone
This win was Diallo’s 50th at ATP level. A neat round number for a player on the rise. Five aces, clean service under pressure, and a composed finish once he had shaken off that first set.
The National Bank Open runs from 1 to 13 August in Montreal. Diallo is through and now moves on to the next round. The local crowd, meanwhile, already knows who it’s cheering for.
