Sebastian Berhalter is swapping MLS for the English second tier. Vancouver Whitecaps confirmed his move to Middlesbrough yesterday. No fee was made public, though several reports land around $2 million. Vancouver also tucked in a sell-on clause, protecting themselves if the player they just cashed in on keeps climbing. Tidy work.

A familiar surname
Berhalter is 25, son of former United States boss Gregg Berhalter. He came up through the Columbus Crew, then passed through Austin before landing in Vancouver. Seven MLS seasons, 147 appearances, 14 goals, 27 assists. This year sharpened the picture: six goals and seven assists in 14 games, enough to get European scouts leaning in. He also logged five matches at the 2026 World Cup, scoring once and setting up another in the group-stage loss to Turkey.
The jump makes sense now
“If he wanted to take on the European challenge at the right time, he would have the chance to do it,” Whitecaps sporting director Axel Schuster said. The timing lined up. Berhalter heads to the Championship to find out how high the ceiling goes.
