McGregor picks his exit
Conor McGregor already knows how he wants to leave the UFC. On Monday he laid the plan out on Instagram: a third fight with Max Holloway, booked for International Fight Week in July 2027. “What was to be a generational beating is now to be reset. IFW 2027. The Last Dance,” he wrote.
The timing is not random. McGregor tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee early in their last meeting and needs surgery to repair it. A year on the shelf lines up with a 2027 date. Dana White confirmed the wait on Sunday, flat and blunt about his biggest star: “Conor McGregor’s out for a year.”

A rematch born from 69 seconds
The reset McGregor keeps talking about points back to July 11 in Las Vegas. At UFC 329, in a welterweight bout, Holloway caught him early, hurt the knee and finished it by technical knockout in 69 seconds. That was McGregor’s first walk to the Octagon in five years, since Dustin Poirier stopped him at UFC 264. He has now lost three straight and four of his past five.
Holloway sits somewhere else entirely. The 34-year-old from Honolulu dropped a decision to Charles Oliveira at UFC 326 in March, then turned around and beat McGregor. The pair also met back in August 2013, when a young McGregor took the decision. One win each, and a third chapter now dangling in front of them.
Why 2027, and why bother
McGregor is 38 and keeps posting videos of himself grinding through leg work, but a repaired ACL does not rush anyone back. White’s “out for a year” line and the IFW 2027 target sit together almost too neatly. Whether Holloway waits that long, and whether the UFC even wants a fourth Holloway assignment handed to a fighter on a losing run, is the part McGregor cannot post his way past.
