MLB: Athletics lose Shea Langeliers to season-ending knee tear

A season likely finished

The Athletics may have to finish the year without their most productive hitter behind the plate. Shea Langeliers tore the meniscus in his right knee while running the bases, ESPN reported Sunday morning, and surgery would shut him down for the rest of the season.

Oakland moved fast, placing the All-Star catcher on the 10-day injured list retroactive to Saturday and recalling Brian Serven from Triple-A Las Vegas. Former All-Star Jonah Heim now inherits the bulk of the catching load.

Langeliers, 28, was slashing .263 with 23 home runs and 51 RBIs across 93 games, and the counting stats tell the real story: he led all American League catchers in both home runs and hits, sitting on 99 knocks. Few teams can absorb the loss of a league-leading bat at the game’s most demanding position, least of all one already skidding.

His path to Oakland runs through Atlanta. The Braves took him ninth overall in the 2019 draft, then sent him west in the March 2022 Matt Olson trade. Since that deal he has hit 111 homers with 288 RBIs. Serven, 31, arrives on the back of a .308 season with nine homers for the Aviators, a useful bat but not the same middle-of-the-order threat.
