A three-team deal that shifts three careers
The NBA had gone quiet. Too quiet, in fact. Then, right in the middle of summer, the market dropped a real bombshell: Zaccharie Risacher is already on his way out of Atlanta and off to Dallas, Lu Dort is headed to the Hawks, Ryan Nembhard is also bound for Georgia, and Oklahoma City gets three second-round picks while slashing its payroll.
On paper, everybody gets something. Dallas is trying to reboot a former No. 1 pick. Atlanta adds a defensive enforcer to the mix. OKC parts with a key part of its identity to stay clean financially under the new CBA.
But the headline picture is this: Risacher, just two years after going No. 1 in the 2024 Draft, is packing his bags again.

Atlanta moves on from Risacher fast
The Hawks experiment did not last long. Zaccharie Risacher had actually made a decent start to life in the NBA. A promising rookie year, 12.6 points per game, and a runner-up finish in Rookie of the Year voting behind Stephon Castle. Nothing spectacular, but enough to suggest a natural climb.
Then the second season knocked him off course.
Less impact, less confidence, less court time, the French forward was gradually squeezed out of Quin Snyder’s rotation. His numbers fell to 9.6 points and 3.8 rebounds, before an even harsher reality in the Playoffs: just 22 minutes total across six games against the Knicks.
For a former No. 1 pick, that is rough. For Atlanta, it was apparently enough to cut its losses.
Dallas gives him a real escape hatch
In Dallas, Risacher is not getting an easy ride. He is getting a chance. And at this stage of his career, that is a big deal.
The Mavericks, now led by Masai Ujiri, still see a long, mobile wing with the tools to become a proper 3-and-D player. His shooting, size, defensive mobility and upside still have value. The talent never vanished. The environment just did not help him grow quickly enough.
In Texas, Risacher joins a young team, with Cooper Flagg now the face of the franchise and Kyrie Irving still in the picture. The idea is appealing: start fresh, shake off the pressure cooker of Atlanta, and find a role where he can breathe.

But nothing will be handed to him
The issue is simple: Dallas is not short of wings. Cooper Flagg is already locked in as the centrepiece. PJ Washington, Naji Marshall and Caleb Martin are there too, older, more polished and more used to NBA demands.
So Risacher will have to earn his minutes. Not on draft status, but on actual production. He will need to defend hard, knock down open shots, run the floor, cut with purpose, accept the dirty work, then slowly rebuild his offensive aggression.
This could be the year the truth starts to show. Not because he is finished at 21, obviously. But because the excuse of projection is gone. The Mavericks still believe in what he can become. Now he has to show Atlanta gave up too soon.
Lu Dort, the move that hurts OKC
In the other major piece of the deal, Lu Dort leaves Oklahoma City. And this is not just a player walking out the door. It is a chunk of the team’s DNA.
Dort spent seven seasons with the Thunder, became a starter, earned a reputation as a defensive menace, won an NBA title in 2025 and made the All-NBA Defensive Team in 2024-25. He stood for the toughness, the defensive identity, the culture built piece by piece around a champion core.
Seeing him go for three second-round picks feels cold. Almost brutal. But with Sam Presti, it is never that simple.
Oklahoma City has now acquired seven second-round picks this offseason, shed $224 million in payroll and tax and positioned themselves comfortably under the second apron via the trades of Dort, Isaiah Joe and Aaron Wiggins.

Presti picks flexibility over feelings
OKC had a team option worth $17.7 million on Dort. Rather than let it go to waste, Presti exercised it and moved him on. The result: three picks in return, a trade exception created, and a huge financial saving in an increasingly suffocating salary environment.
Since the start of summer, the Thunder have already let Aaron Wiggins and Isaiah Joe go, and now Dort too. From a distance, it looks like a champion weakening itself. Up close, it looks more like a franchise refusing to get trapped by the second apron.
With the hefty deals of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren, plus Cason Wallace’s extension looming, OKC could not pay everybody. Presti chose to get ahead of it.

Atlanta adds grit, not gloss
For the Hawks, landing Lu Dort sends a clear message. Atlanta wants to defend harder, play more physically, and add experience and bite to a group that has made the Playoffs again and is starting to look upward.
Dort will not fix every offensive issue, nowhere near it. But in a series, having a guard who can go chest-to-chest with the opposition’s top scorers, apply pressure and wreck possessions matters a lot.
With Ryan Nembhard also arriving, Atlanta picks up another young player to develop while keeping enough flexibility to keep moving pieces around.
Risacher now has to write version two
This trade says plenty. About how ruthless the NBA is with young talent. About the cold logic of the new CBA. About Presti’s ability to think three moves ahead. About Atlanta’s ambition. And, above all, about Zaccharie Risacher’s fresh start.
In Dallas, the Frenchman does not need promises any more. He needs minutes, trust and real answers.
Atlanta has moved on.
The Mavericks, meanwhile, are betting there is still a proper player waiting to break through the noise.
Now it is down to Zacch to prove them right.
