World Cup 2026 : Mbappé and Olise leave with silverware as France lead the stats

France may have gone home empty-handed after this World Cup, but one thing jumps out when you scan the numbers. The top two attacking categories are both headed by Didier Deschamps’ players.

In front of goal, Kylian Mbappé was in a class of his own. As a creator, Michael Olise set up more goals than anyone else. Small comfort after finishing fourth, sure, but it says plenty about an attack that carried France for long spells.

Mbappé finishes on top again

He left Qatar with the Golden Boot. Four years on, the France captain has gone one better. Ten goals in eight games, plus four assists. No one had a bigger impact on their team’s run.

Lionel Messi finished on eight goals despite another run all the way to the final with Argentina. Behind him, Jude Bellingham and Erling Haaland both wrapped up the tournament on seven. The Englishman edges it on assists, though, with one more than Haaland.

The tournament that confirmed Michael Olise

His passes for Mbappé, Dembele and Barcola lit up the competition. In his first World Cup, Michael Olise finished with seven assists, a total never seen before in the tournament’s history.

The France playmaker got going in the group stage and kept feeding the attack all the way to the third-place play-off. Behind him, Messi, Mbappé, Bruno Guimaraes, Martin Odegaard and Brahim Diaz are all stuck on four assists apiece.

The World Cup will probably go down as a collective letdown for France. On an individual level, though, Mbappé and Olise leave the United States sitting at the top of the two main attacking charts.
