Forty million reasons, and a goodbye nobody could stop
Weeks of speculation, and now the paperwork is signed. Mason Greenwood is no longer a Marseille player. A day after Fenerbahce paraded their new man, OM put out its own statement to shut a chapter that was as productive as it was awkward.
The England forward heads to Turkey after two years on the Canebiere, for a fee in the region of 40 million euros. Historic money for both clubs. It still does not tell the whole story.
His football did the talking. In 81 appearances for Marseille he racked up 48 goals and 17 assists, the kind of return that explains why an entire side ended up built around what he could do on his own.

Two seasons of goals, and a fit that never fully clicked
Greenwood was the attack. Two-footed, quick to beat a defender, lethal in a tight pocket of space, he dragged OM through matches that had no business being won. Ligue 1 defenders will not miss him.
Yet it was never a straight line. Marseille leaned on him, maybe too hard, and the collective results rarely matched the individual highlight reel. The final season in particular turned heavy.
That was the paradox. Enormous output, undeniable value, an adventure that never carried the club as far as it wanted to go.

Fenerbahce break the bank
The race went to Fenerbahce, and they had to fight for it, holding off interest that included Atletico Madrid. The Istanbul club committed to a four-year contract and a 39 million euro fee spread across three instalments.
That makes Greenwood the most expensive signing in Fenerbahce history, past the 28 million they paid for Matteo Guendouzi. The plan is not subtle. Hand the attack to a player who can decide a title race.
The wages back up the intent, with the forward reportedly set to bank around 10 million euros gross a year.
A record sale that isn’t quite the jackpot it looks
For Marseille, this is oxygen. No Champions League football, pressure from UEFA and the DNCG, a squad that needed to raise cash. Greenwood was the obvious asset to sell, and his exit was written on the wall.
The headline number tops the club record of 39 million set by Michy Batshuayi back in 2016, with bonuses of up to 5 million more should Fenerbahce win the Turkish league.
Here is the catch. A sell-on clause from the original Manchester United deal hands the English club 40% of the resale, so OM will actually pocket somewhere near 24 million from the fixed fee. High sale, smaller reality.

The club calls it a mutual decision
OM’s statement worked hard on the framing. The parting, it said, followed a shared reflection between player and management, a call taken together.
The subtext is easy to read. Marseille does not want to look like a club that lost its top scorer against its will. Officially, this is a cycle ending on agreed terms.
The statement also thanked Greenwood for his time in the shirt and wished him luck for whatever comes next.
Now comes the hard part for Marseille
Replacing 48 goals and 17 assists is not a job you finish with a press release. Greenwood sat at the centre of everything OM tried to build going forward, and pulling him out leaves an obvious gap.
The money buys flexibility. It does not buy a like-for-like replacement. The smart move is spreading the reinvestment across one or two additions rather than betting the whole season on a single new face.
Marseille has turned a big page.
Fenerbahce have their marquee attacker.
And Greenwood walks away with the numbers, the record fee, and a spell that delivered plenty without ever quite touching its ceiling.
