Back to Europe, but not back to square one
Guerschon Yabusele is leaving the NBA. Two years after his return to the big league, the French big man is heading back to Europe and will wear Panathinaikos colours next season. On paper, some will see that as a step down. In reality, it looks more like a return to a place where Yabu knows exactly how to survive, impose himself and win.
His spell with the Sixers had briefly brought the buzz back. His stop with the Knicks never really clicked. His move to the Bulls already felt like the end of the NBA road. This time, the France captain is closing the American chapter and heading back to the top level in Europe.
And not to just any club. Panathinaikos is a giant. A packed arena, relentless standards, continental ambition and the sort of pressure that suits players with bite.

The NBA was never really his best fit
Yabusele has always had a profile that is tricky to pin down in the NBA. Too much of a true big for some systems, not always used enough as a mismatch threat, and at times reduced to jobs that barely scratch the surface of what he can do. Even so, his energy, power, outside shot and mobility remain obvious weapons.
At Philly, he showed he could be genuinely useful. He brought intensity, spacing, toughness and the ability to step into a game without asking for permission. But the NBA is built on fit. The right role, the right rotation, the right coach, the right timing. When those pieces do not line up, even a handy player can end up stuck on the margins.
At the Knicks, the project never really suited him. At the Bulls, it already felt like a short-term arrangement. Europe, though, offers him something else: a bigger stage.
Panathinaikos is handing him a real role
That is probably the biggest point here. At Panathinaikos, Yabusele is not arriving to pick up a few minutes at the end of the bench. He is coming to matter. To take responsibility. To be used as a major piece, with the ball, off the ball, in matchups, and on the big EuroLeague nights.
The French Bear knows the competition. Better than that, he has already conquered it. A two-time EuroLeague winner in 2023 and 2024 with Real Madrid, he knows exactly what these long, tense, draining campaigns demand. He also knows how to respond when games turn ugly, when possessions get heavy, when every rebound becomes a scrap.
So Panathinaikos are getting more than a name. They are getting a player built to win in Europe.
A move that could help Les Bleus too
With major international tournaments not far away, this could also be good news for France. A Yabusele with responsibility, minutes and a big role at a top European club is probably a better outcome than a Yabusele stranded in an unstable NBA rotation.
The France captain needs rhythm, confidence and authority. Europe can give him all of that. And at a club like Panathinaikos, every week feels like a proper test. Greek league, EuroLeague, hostile atmospheres, fierce rivalries: there will be no shortage of meaningful games.

The Fournier showdown is already mouth-watering
It is hard not to think about the French reunion in Greece either. Evan Fournier is over at Olympiacos, their historic rivals. Yabusele is going to Panathinaikos. That means the Athens derbies are about to get an extra edge for French basketball fans.
Two France leaders, two ex-NBA players, two characters, two sworn enemies. It is set up beautifully. And given the venom that comes with Panathinaikos against Olympiacos, those meetings could quickly become unmissable dates on the European calendar.
The Bear is heading back to where he can roar
This NBA exit is not some final failure. It looks more like a smart reset. Yabusele is going back to where his game has often been best understood, where his impact can be central, and where he can once again play for serious silverware.
The NBA Cup was a decent line on the CV. But the EuroLeague is his recent kingdom. With Real Madrid, he already proved he could belong to a champion. With Panathinaikos, he gets the chance to build a new chapter at a club that never shows up just to make up the numbers.
Guerschon Yabusele is leaving the big league.
But he is heading back into a jungle he knows very well.
