Transfer market: Roma and Marseille are five million apart on Greenwood deal

Transfer market: Roma and Marseille are five million apart on Greenwood deal

Transfer market: Greenwood has said yes to Roma, but there is still a gap to close between the clubs

Mason Greenwood has made his choice. The Marseille forward has decided to join Roma, drawn in by Gian Piero Gasperini’s project and the chance to play in the Champions League. According to reports in Italy, the Grugliasco-born coach has been on the phone with the player repeatedly over the past few days, promising him a tailor-made role in his 3-4-2-1, operating in his natural spot on the right, just behind the centre-forward. “Sei pronto a correre ?”, Gasperini is said to have asked him. Greenwood did not take long to answer. A basic agreement has already been reached with the player on a five-year deal worth around 4.5 million euros a season. Saudi Arabia, Fenerbahce and Atletico Madrid are, for now, far less tempting options in the Englishman’s eyes.

The main obstacle remains the same: getting Roma and Marseille to agree on a fee. The Giallorossi are ready to put forward an offer of around 45 million euros including bonuses, but Marseille want 50. That five-million gap is still holding up the deal. Greenwood reported as expected for Marseille duty at La Commanderie, waiting for a quick resolution. Roma’s hierarchy are working through the final details and should table their official bid in the next few hours. Today could be decisive either way.

Moreira and other live issues on Roma’s desk

Greenwood is not the only live file at Trigoria. Roma are also targeting Diego Moreira, the Belgium left winger at Strasbourg, whom Gasperini and sporting director Tony D’Amico know well from their Atalanta days. The French club are asking for 40 million euros, a figure the Giallorossi hope to drag down. Moreira’s standout displays at the Club World Cup, especially against Senegal, have pushed up his price tag and made talks tougher. Negotiations are expected to speed up once the tournament is over.

Other names are in the mix too: Nahuel Molina from Atletico Madrid for the right flank, and Nicolo Tresoldi, the Bruges striker, who could come to Rome as Malen’s understudy alongside a departure for Artem Dovbyk. It is an ambitious window for a Roma side intent on giving itself a real shot at the Champions League next season.
