NBA : Porzingis re-signs with the Warriors for $40 million over 2 years

It had been expected, and Kristaps Porzingis has now officially re-signed with the Warriors on a two-year, $40 million deal. Insider Shams Charania broke the news on social media on Monday night, just before NBA free agency opens later tonight.

Even if it was not all smooth sailing in Golden State, Porzingis gave Dub Nation a reason to smile. Brought in from Atlanta in the Jonathan Kuminga trade, the Latvian looked like a natural fit in Steve Kerr’s system. In just 15 games, Porzingis put up solid numbers: 16.1 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists.

A style that suits the Bay, strong form right at the end of the season and a good connection with Stephen Curry – that was enough to convince the Warriors’ front office. The news came down yesterday: Porzingis has signed on for two more years in Golden State for $40 million. It is a deal that matches the player, though some will still raise an eyebrow at the money going to someone with a long injury history. The second year of the contract is a player option, leaving him a way out further down the line.

A rare fit the Warriors needed

At 2m21, Kristaps Porzingis is not your standard big man. Since entering the NBA, he has built his reputation on a rare mix: rim protection on one end, and the ability to stretch the floor beyond the three-point line on the other.

With Golden State, he played only 15 games, but his impact showed up quickly. The center averaged 16.1 points on 43.3% shooting, underlining that he can still be a major offensive threat when he is fit.

For the Warriors, that is a proper step forward. For years, this team has thrived on movement, outside shooting and the creativity of its guards. Adding a player who can punish teams inside while forcing defences to chase him out to the perimeter gives them a different weapon.

A career unlike most

Porzingis has never taken the usual route. In 10 NBA seasons, he has already worn six different uniforms. From the New York Knicks to the Dallas Mavericks, via the Washington Wizards, Boston Celtics and now the Warriors, nobody has questioned the talent. The bigger question has usually been whether he can stay on the floor.

When he does play, though, his impact is obvious. Across his NBA career, Porzingis has averaged 19.5 points over 533 games. He has also reached the top, winning an NBA title with the Boston Celtics in 2024. That experience could prove vital for a Warriors team trying to squeeze every last drop out of Curry’s remaining years.

Golden State is making moves…

With this extension, the Warriors have sent a clear message: they are not just here to see Curry fade out, they still believe they can win. Bringing in Porzingis, then keeping him, fits a plan built around veterans who can make an immediate impact. The window might be tighter than it used to be, but the ambition has not gone anywhere.

Golden State has finally decided to get busy this offseason. On the wishlist for the front office are LeBron James and Anthony Davis, two major names they would love to land as free agency opens tonight.
