Transfer talk: Greenwood says yes to Roma, Marseille wait for their price

The Greenwood file is moving. According to Corriere dello Sport, Mason Greenwood has reached a principle agreement with AS Roma. The 24 year old England forward has given the green light to Gian Piero Gasperini’s project, with the Italian coach making him his top target for this summer window. On the wages side, Greenwood would earn 4 million euros net per season, plus rising bonuses over the life of the deal. The contract length has not been officially confirmed, but Italian media are talking about a deal through to 2031.

For Greenwood, Roma have always been the preferred destination. His camp were simply waiting for the club to qualify for the Champions League, which is now done. The Fenerbahce option, after they had made an early move, has fallen apart following the change in leadership at the Turkish club. Al-Hilal and Atletico Madrid have also been mentioned, but Roma have led the race for several weeks now, helped by serious talks between the player’s father and agent and the club’s executives.

Marseille want 55 million, Roma are starting at 40

If Greenwood has said yes, the hard part is still to come between the two clubs. Roma are waiting for the official appointment of sporting director Tony D’Amico before making their move with Marseille. Their opening offer is expected to be around 40 million euros, well below Marseille’s valuation. OM want 55 million euros, having to hand 40% of any fee to Manchester United.

On the pitch, Greenwood put together a strong season in Marseille with 26 goals and 11 assists in 45 appearances in all competitions. But his strained relationship with part of the club hierarchy, including Medhi Benatia, and Roberto De Zerbi’s departure sped up his desire to move on. Marseille need to sell before 30 June to balance the books. There is still a 15 million euro gap between the two clubs, but the talks have only just started.
