Atlanta ties Quin Snyder down after Hawks’ strong progress
Atlanta is backing continuity. According to ESPN, the Hawks and Quin Snyder have agreed to a multi-year contract extension. It’s a move that fits the franchise’s push to steady its basketball plans after several seasons of heavy turnover across the organisation.
The extension comes just days after Onsi Saleh was also confirmed in his role leading the basketball side. Atlanta’s bosses are clearly keen to keep the pair in place as they try to guide the franchise into its next phase.
A strong finish changed the outlook on Snyder
When Quin Snyder took over the team in 2023, the results did not come straight away. The Hawks finished 36-46 in his first full season, before improving to 40 wins the following year.
The real shift came this season. Atlanta closed the 2025-2026 campaign with a 46-36 record, powered by a blistering run down the stretch and a sixth-place finish in the Eastern Conference. The Hawks won 20 of their last 26 games and went into the playoffs with genuine belief again.
The arrival of C.J. McCollum brought more balance to a group that was still trying to find its feet after a series of major changes. Under Snyder, Atlanta looked far more settled, defending with bite while still putting up points around Jalen Johnson, who made his first All-Star team.

The Hawks gave the Knicks their toughest test
That progress showed in the playoffs too. Facing the Knicks in the first round, Atlanta pushed the New York side hard. After going 2-1 up in the series, the Hawks eventually fell in six games, but they walked away with plenty of credit.
With hindsight, that effort looks even better. Since then, New York have kept on winning all the way to the NBA Finals, and no team has troubled them quite like Atlanta. Even now, the Hawks remain the last side to beat the Knicks, who have been on a serious tear ever since.
Against that backdrop, Snyder’s extension feels like the obvious next step. Atlanta believes it has found a direction, and a coach who can grow with its emerging core. After years of instability, the Hawks have gone for continuity.
