Roland-Garros 2026 : Daniil Medvedev stunned early by Adam Walton!
The crowd at Porte d’Auteuil saw another shock on Tuesday, 26 May. True to his odd, miserable relationship with the Paris clay, Daniil Medvedev was sent packing in the first round of the 2026 edition. Up against Australian Adam Walton, the No. 6 seed went down after a wildly up-and-down match that was all over the place on the scoreboard. For the Russian, last year’s nightmare has been replayed by an opponent with no fear and the biggest scalp of his career.
A rollercoaster match with a bizarre scoreline
This one played out like a thriller, with the first four sets turning into a series of one-sided beatings. After a poor opening set, Medvedev hit straight back by hammering Walton 6-1. But instead of kicking on, the Russian completely collapsed in the next set by the same score, then returned the favour in the fourth. It was only in the fifth set that the contest finally tightened up, and there Walton found the crucial break to surge clear and seal victory.
Try it for $0.99.
The Paris curse rolls on for Medvedev
This early exit is sadly nothing new for the US Open champion. For the third time in the last four years, Daniil Medvedev will not even see the second round on the Roland-Garros clay. The numbers are getting ugly too: in his 10th appearance in Paris, the Russian champion has now packed his bags in round one for the 7th time. His struggles on clay are starting to hurt him badly in the world rankings.
Adam Walton lands the first major shock of the draw
Across the net, Adam Walton could hardly believe what he had just done when he clinched the final point. By staying ice-cool in the decider against a top-10 player, the Australian has thrown the door wide open for the rest of his run and blown this section of the men’s draw wide apart. With the Paris fortnigh t only just underway, this unexpected win is another reminder that Roland-Garros remains the most unpredictable Grand Slam on the calendar.
