Just as the series preview predicted, the Pistons smothered this Cavaliers team. By forcing 19 Cleveland turnovers, Cunningham and Co. have already seized control at home.
A 111-101 win over Cleveland opens the series with instant heat. Detroit leads 1-0, but more than that, it is imposing its identity. Aggressive defence, controlled pace and a leader who doesn’t blink, at least not much…
Cunningham in charge, Pistons in rhythm
Cade Cunningham didn’t need to do everything to own the game. He finished with 23 points on a rough shooting night (6/19 %FG), but his read of the floor was spot on. He pushed when needed, picked the right passes and kept the tempo exactly where Detroit wanted it.
Interesting to watch Cade Cunningham work to cycle through matchups. Gets the pindown from Tobias Harris but with Mobley involved he waves him off. Calls for Robinson to screen so he can get Mitchell in action. Robinson sets his screen flat, Cade gets two, pop and drive there. pic.twitter.com/Q8hkiPHRNR

When the game tightened up, he didn’t force it. He created, the opposite of Game 1 against Orlando, when he kept jamming action after action and Detroit paid for it with a painful home loss. That’s where this team made the difference. Tobias Harris added 20 steady, no-nonsense points. Duncan Robinson chipped in 19, vital from deep with a sharp 5/8 from 3-point range. Everything balanced out, everything moved, and Jalen Duren is starting to find his feet again with 11 points and 12 rebounds on 4/11 shooting.
Defence is the calling card
Detroit didn’t win this one by attacking alone. It won it by choking the Cavs with 20 forced turnovers and 31 points off those mistakes. Constant pressure on passing lanes, physicality on every possession, and Cleveland just never got a clean look.
Donovan Mitchell was held to 23 points, ending an impressive run of 30-plus in series openers. James Harden had his moments, but his seven turnovers hurt badly and Detroit gave him no breathing room.
Cleveland rallies, then slides back
This wasn’t one-way traffic. Cleveland took the punches, bent, but didn’t break straight away. The lead grew to 18, then slipped back.
In the fourth quarter, the Cavs fought back. It was tied at 93 apiece and the momentum looked like it had flipped. But Detroit didn’t panic for a second.
The sequence that turned it
On the next possession, Jalen Duren blocked Harden. From there, he rattled off three straight dunks. Three plays, three blows, all set up by Cunningham.

The message was clear: Detroit wrestled back control, and this time Cleveland had no answer. The Pistons took Game 1 at home. The win also snapped a brutal playoff skid against Cleveland. Twelve straight losses to the same opponent until last night.
A series has started, a response is due
Cleveland has adjustments to make. Right now, the Pistons are setting the terms and the Cavaliers look short on answers. Some players need to raise their game, especially Harden and Mitchell, who can’t afford to be anything less than efficient against a team that punishes every mistake.
Game 2 is tomorrow night, and we’ll see whether Atkinson’s men can wrestle back control before heading to Ohio down 2-0.
