Serie A: Milan footballers caught up in prostitution scandal

Milan scandal: Serie A players linked to dismantled prostitution ring

An organised criminal network operating at the heart of Milan’s nightlife has been shut down by Italy’s financial police. The case, first reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport, goes well beyond a routine crime story. Among the ring’s clients are said to be a number of professional footballers in Serie A, living in Lombardy and connected to the city’s clubs, most likely AC Milan or Inter Milan.

Four men have been placed under investigation and are being pursued for aiding and profiting from prostitution, as well as money laundering. The network recruited escorts in two different ways: by using professional sex workers on one side, and by targeting young women drawn in at high-society parties across the Lombardy capital on the other. It was in these private circles that the clientele, described by investigators as “particularly wealthy”, gained access to the services on offer.

More than 1 million euros in turnover

La Gazzetta dello Sport says it has obtained documents linked to the investigation. According to those papers, the client list mixes powerful business figures and top-level sportsmen. The Milan sports daily specifically refers to “a significant number of Serie A footballers” without naming them. The investigating magistrate’s order only reveals part of the identities involved, leaving the true scale of the net cast over those targeted unclear.

On the financial side, investigators have established turnover of more than 1.2 million euros. Some of that money has already been seized by the authorities. The scale of the cash trail points to a slick operation, one that had been running for some time on the fringes of Milan’s nightlife without drawing the attention of police.

The case is still unfolding and the latest revelations could quickly send shockwaves through several well-known figures in Italian football. The investigation continues, and more names may yet surface in the coming weeks.
