Premier League – Wolverhampton officially relegated

Wolverhampton drop into the Championship, eight years after their last spell there

The axe finally fell on Monday night. Wolverhampton have been officially relegated to the second tier after West Ham scraped a point at Crystal Palace (0-0). That draw was enough to make the verdict irreversible: with five games left, the Wolves are done, stranded on 17 points while West Ham sit on 33.

Saturday’s 3-0 loss at Leeds had already told the story. That was defeat number 22 in 33 league matches. Wolverhampton have spent the entire 2025-2026 campaign with no real escape route, pinned to the bottom almost throughout. The only time they were not 20th was after Matchday 2, and even then it was only because West Ham had conceded more goals. Nothing more.

January before the first win

It took until January for Wolverhampton to win a match. And, of course, it came against West Ham, with the Wolves finally getting off the mark in a 3-0 win. Two more victories followed between late February and mid-March, against Aston Villa and Liverpool, with a draw against Brentford in between. A brief lift, but far too late and far too isolated to change anything.

Two managers, same outcome

In November, the club sacked Vitor Pereira. Two points from ten games and the writing was on the wall. Rob Edwards came in, but he could not drag a team already sunk too deep back from the brink. Relegation has been coming for weeks.

Wolverhampton are back in the Championship, eight years after leaving it in 2018. One level down, and there is plenty of rebuilding to do.
