A high-wire act from Julio Rodriguez in centre field
A ball coming off the bat at more than 107 mph, yet floating through the air like a knuckleball? That was the problem Nick Kurtz handed Julio Rodriguez on Monday night. But the Mariners star came up with a pure piece of brilliance for the very first out of the game. Forced to dig in fast, twist in mid-air and reach across his body, J-Rod ended up on the grass with a grin on his face. “I’ve always been more athletic than people think,” he said after a play that wiped out what looked like a certain double, maybe even a triple, right out of the gate.
A hot offence, a bullpen that fell apart
Julio did not stop at the defensive acrobatics. In the next inning, he lined a single, stole second and scored on a Josh Naylor double. With home runs from Cal Raleigh and Dominic Canzone as well, Seattle looked to be in control. But baseball can turn on the smallest things: after starter Emerson Hancock surrendered three solo homers, the bullpen completely caved. Casey Legumina killed off the home side’s hopes by giving up three decisive runs in the eighth inning, sealing a 6-4 defeat for the Mariners against the Athletics.
The Gold Glove chase is on
If the Mariners came up short as a team, Rodriguez boosted his own case in the hunt for his first Gold Glove. A frustrated finalist in 2023 and 2025, the Dominican has turned the award into a real obsession. His Statcast numbers back it up too: since entering the league, he ranks fourth among centre fielders for outs above average (37). For him, a spectacular catch like this against an elite hitter is not just another highlight reel clip, it is proof of his defensive value. If the trophy ends up on his mantel at season’s end, this diving stop against Oakland will be remembered as the defining image of his campaign.
