A collapse that’s more than a scoreline
This time there are no excuses. No “it could’ve gone either way.” No luck.
Italy won’t be at the 2026 World Cup. Again.
After 2018, after 2022, now 2026. Three straight absences for a four-star nation. A scenario that felt impossible a decade ago. Now it’s an ugly, familiar reality. Too familiar.
And this exit to Bosnia and Herzegovina (1-1, 4-1 on penalties) left more than a bitter taste. It left a fracture.
Donnarumma, the face of a night that went off the rails
In the chaos one face stood out. Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Not for his saves. Not for his mistakes. For his attitude.
Tense all game, the Italian captain snapped at the worst possible moment. Irritated, he clashed with Bosnian keeper Nikola Vasilj, tried to rip up his penalty notes… the scene spread across Europe.
And it shocked.
In Bosnia the reaction was brutal. Some outlets called it arrogance, rudeness, even a “disgrace to professional football.” Harsh words, but they show the size of the fallout.
A leader who lost control
What’s troubling isn’t just the act. It’s what it meant.
At that point Italy was sinking. The takers were filled with doubt. Pressure was off the charts. And the captain — meant to calm, marshal, lead — exploded.
Instead of encouraging, he provoked. Instead of calming, he made the situation worse.
In moments like that great leaders change the story. Donnarumma looked overwhelmed.
And that changes everything.
A game that had already gone wrong
It wasn’t all lost at once.
Italy had opened the scoring through Moise Kean. They even held on after Alessandro Bastoni was sent off, a bitter turning point to swallow.
But, as so often with this side, the finish killed them. Bosnia leveled, tension spiked, then came the penalty shootout.
And then the blackout.
Misses, doubt, silence. A brutal exit. Almost inevitable given how fragile the squad looked mentally.
A nation hitting rock bottom
The Italian headlines were savage.
“Shame.” “Apocalypse.” “Historic debacle.”
Words that show deep exasperation. This isn’t an accident anymore. It’s a trend.
Italy, once a global benchmark, is slipping toward second-tier status. The contrast with Italian success in other sports only makes the football failure harder to swallow.
Gattuso, Buffon, Gravina: the system in the dock
Anger quickly turned toward the bosses.
Gennaro Gattuso, the coach, looks exposed. Some want him to stay, but the doubts are massive.
Gianluigi Buffon, now on the staff, could quit. A symbolic exit, almost inevitable after such a collapse.
And at the top, Gabriele Gravina is taking the flak. His tone feels out of touch, he won’t step down, and there’s the impression of a system that refuses to look itself in the mirror.
This is no longer just a sporting problem. It’s structural.
A split between the pitch and reality
What’s striking is the gap.
On one side a team that fights, suffers, snaps. On the other a leadership that talks about pride, heroism, continuity.
That gulf fuels the anger. For many, carrying on like nothing’s wrong is a denial of the obvious.
Italy must change. Deeply.
Donnarumma: fall guy or a wider symptom?
So should everything be pinned on Donnarumma?
No. That would be too simple.
Yes, his behavior is blameworthy. Yes, it stuck in the mind. But it’s also the mirror of a team under pressure, of a weakened system, of a generation that can’t shoulder the legacy.
Donnarumma isn’t the cause. He’s the symptom.
And now, what?
That’s the real question.
How do you rebuild? With whom? On what foundations?
Italy has talent. Players. A massive history. But today that’s not enough.
It’ll take more than a new coach. More than a tactical tweak.
They need a full reset.
A page to rip up… and start again?
Ironically, the image of Donnarumma trying to tear that scrap of paper might stick as the night’s emblem.
A gesture of frustration. Of lost control. Of helplessness.
But maybe, despite everything, it’s also the starting point of a new cycle.
Because after a fall like this there are only two options.
Keep falling. Or finally decide to stand up.
