A night decided by the smallest margins
Nine games. Different scripts. Same result: nothing came easy.
With repeated overtimes, individual heroics and goalie masterclasses, the night of March 22 reminded everyone why the NHL is one of sport’s most unpredictable leagues.
And, as always, tiny moments made the difference.

Sorokin shuts the door, Islanders advance in silence
No offensive fireworks on Long Island. Just control.
Ilya Sorokin was flawless: 26 saves, zero goals against. Seventh shutout of the season, the league lead.
Up front, Bo Horvat did the bare minimum. One quick goal — that was enough.
1-0 win over Columbus. Valuable. Efficient. Typical of a team that knows how to win without looking pretty.
Winnipeg survives at the Garden, Rangers slide
In New York, things were tenser.
The Jets snatched a shootout win (3-2). Gabriel Vilardi shone, Eric Comrie held firm, and Winnipeg left smiling.
For the Rangers, the bad run continues. Fourth straight loss. Even with Mika Zibanejad still making plays, nothing’s clicking.
And late in the season, that kind of slide can cost you.
Ovechkin makes history… yet Colorado takes the win
It was Alex Ovechkin’s night.
1,000 career goals. A signature power-play blast from his usual spot. History was made.
But in the end it’s Colorado walking away with the win (3-2, OT). Brock Nelson settled it in overtime.
A historic moment… in a loss. Cruel, but unforgettable.
Nashville and Calgary win in chaos
Two games. Two overtimes. Two tense finishes.
Filip Forsberg handed the Predators the win over Chicago. Calm, precise, decisive.
In Calgary, Ryan Strome settled it in 26 seconds against Tampa Bay. A quick, sharp play that ended a tight game.
In moments like that you don’t need much space. Just the right move.
Carolina rolls, Vegas hits late in Dallas
The Hurricanes didn’t need any drama.
A tidy 5-1 win in Pittsburgh. Power play surgical, Seth Jarvis pulling the strings, total domination.
Vegas, though, waited for its moment. Reilly Smith found it with under four minutes left to beat Dallas (3-2).
A gut punch for the Stars… even though they’ve locked up a playoff spot.
Anaheim and Utah escape in the dying moments
It was wild in Anaheim.
A 6-5 overtime win over Buffalo. Troy Terry finished off a crazy, back-and-forth game.
Buffalo thought they’d done the hard part. But in this league nothing’s ever safe until the final second.
Same story in Utah.
Nick Schmaltz grabbed a brace, including the overtime winner against the Kings (4-3). An open, fast, unpredictable game.
Exactly what the NHL does best.
An evening that sums up the NHL perfectly
Tight games. Unexpected heroes. Overtime everywhere.
And amid it all, one certainty.
Every point matters. Every mistake costs. Any night can reshuffle the standings.
At this point in the season, nobody’s counting. Everyone’s playing to survive.
