Champions League: Federico Valverde floors Manchester City and hands Real Madrid a masterclass

Real Madrid weakened — yet still unpredictable

In the history of the UEFA Champions League there’s one stubborn fact: no matter the context, the injuries or the doubt, Real Madrid somehow finds a way to flip the script.

This Wednesday at the Santiago Bernabéu, the Madrid side added another chapter. Missing big names like Jude Bellingham, Rodrygo and, crucially, Kylian Mbappé — injured and watching from the stands — they weren’t exactly fancied to put Manchester City to the sword.

And yet, Madrid ripped it up — 3-0 in the first leg.

A tidy win, built in the first half and carried by one man who lit up the night: Federico Valverde.

Valverde turns the night into a one-man show

On big European nights some players have a sixth sense for the moment. Valverde proved he’s one of them.

The Uruguay midfielder bagged the first hat-trick of his professional career — and against one of Europe’s best.

His first arrived after twenty minutes. From a long boot out by goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, Valverde cushioned it, shrugged off his marker with a quick move and charged at Gianluigi Donnarumma. The Italian keeper blinked — just enough time for Valverde to finish coolly.

Seven minutes later the No.15 struck again. Fed in behind by Vinícius Júnior, he let fly with his left from a tight angle and beat Donnarumma once more.

The Bernabéu suddenly knew something special was happening.

A third that swung the tie

Just before the break Valverde put the tie beyond doubt with a stunning finish.

On the edge of the box Brahim Díaz dinked a clever lob into City’s defence. Valverde brought it down with an acrobatic touch, shrugged off his man and smashed a volley that left the keeper helpless.

Three shots. Three goals. The stadium erupted.

In the stands Kylian Mbappé watched the show, grinning. Injured and unused, the French striker didn’t play but he soaked up every second of his team-mate’s performance.

That third blow knocked the stuffing out of Manchester City, who never recovered from Madrid’s intensity.

Manchester City helpless against Madrid’s clinical edge

Pep Guardiola’s side tried to fight back.

Jérémy Doku caused problems for Madrid’s defence several times, pinning Trent Alexander-Arnold on his flank. Bernardo Silva carved out a dangerous chance too, pushed away by Courtois.

But Madrid’s clinical edge quickly snuffed out English hopes.

In the second half Real could have made it worse. On a counter led by Arda Güler, Vinícius won a penalty after a foul by Donnarumma. The Brazilian went for something flashy, but the Italian keeper recovered to push the attempt away.

At the other end Erling Haaland looked set to pull one back from a golden chance, but Antonio Rüdiger flew in to save his side.

A frustrating night for City — bossed in every department.

Valverde, the poster boy for modern Real Madrid

At full-time one name echoed around the stadium: Federico Valverde.

The Uruguayan produced one of the most complete performances of his career. Defending, driving forward, pressing, creating — he was everywhere.

Team-mate Aurélien Tchouaméni summed it up after the game, praising a player who can do everything on a pitch.

Observers felt the same. On the CBS Sports panel, Thierry Henry couldn’t hide his excitement over Valverde’s display.

Valverde now perfectly embodies the spirit of modern Real Madrid: versatile, intense and decisive in big moments.

Qualification almost in the bag before the return

The 3-0 win gives Real Madrid a huge advantage heading to the return in England.

The lead’s comfortable — but European nights remind you nothing’s ever safe.

For Álvaro Arbeloa and his side, the job now is to manage the return smartly. There’s also a possible boost: Kylian Mbappé might be back, and they’re still hoping he’ll make it to the Etihad Stadium.

But beyond qualification, this was, above all, one man’s night.

At the Bernabéu, Federico Valverde reminded everyone why the big European nights so often belong to Real Madrid.
