A showdown everyone wanted in the California desert
At Indian Wells certain matches light up the draw. Sabalenka vs Osaka was one of those — impossible to ignore.
The world No. 1 met the Japanese star for only the second time. Eight years ago, at the 2018 US Open, Osaka won their first meeting and went on to lift the trophy.
Careers have gone different ways since then. Now it’s Sabalenka who walks in wearing the boss badge on tour.

Sabalenka stamps her authority straight away
The Belarusian left no doubt. From the first points she played big — power, aggression — and put Osaka under pressure on nearly every rally.
On serve she was flawless: eight aces, zero double faults and not a single break point conceded.
Complete control.
Osaka never found a rhythm. Sabalenka took the first set 6-2, dictating the tempo.
Osaka fights back but Sabalenka stays unshakable
In the second set Osaka tried to push back. Rallies stretched out and she looked more dangerous.
But when the big moments came, Sabalenka turned up. Sharp in the clutch, rock-solid on serve, she kept the edge.
She closed it out 6-2, 6-4 in 1h20.
A clean, controlled win that underlines her current grip on the tour.
Another quarter-final spot at Indian Wells
Sabalenka is building a special relationship with Indian Wells. The world No. 1 has reached the quarter-finals for the third time in the last four editions.
A finalist in 2023 and again in 2025, she seems to find her stride in the California desert.
And this year she’s moving on with clear ambition.
A blistering start to the season
The picture is simple: Sabalenka keeps winning. The world No. 1 is now 14 wins from 15 matches this season.
For a place in the last four she will face Amanda Anisimova or Canada’s Victoria Mboko.
A two-time finalist in recent years in California, Sabalenka is still hunting the one title that has so far slipped through her hands at Indian Wells.
