Across the net, Arthur Rinderknech tried to ride his serve and shorten points. The Russian shrugged off the variations. Just two break points to defend all match.
He wrapped the first set up 6-2. The second was tighter, but the hierarchy never wavered.
A brief wobble — quickly quelled
At 5-1 in the second, Rublev looked set for a quick finish. Then he dropped three games in a row. A flicker of tension.
No panic.
At 5-4 he tightened up, found his first serve and shut it down. 6-2, 6-4. That’s that.
Back on form in Dubai
Dropped in the first round here last year, Rublev has bounced back in the emirate. The No.5 seed reaches the semifinals this time with authority.
After seeing off Royer then Humbert, he completed a clean sweep of the French with Rinderknech. A week he controlled.
He now waits on the winner of Jakub Mensik vs Tallon Griekspoor to know his semi opponent.
In Dubai Rublev is ramping up. When he finds that level of consistency, he’s a nightmare to dislodge.
