Rugby match action during a Springboks Nations Championship game

Rugby: Springboks run in nine tries to crush Italy 66-7

Nine tries in Turin

South Africa did not need long to settle the argument. The Springboks beat Italy 66-7 in the Nations Championship on Saturday, scoring nine tries to one, and they had the bonus point locked up before the 25-minute mark.

Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu scored inside the first ten minutes. Malcolm Marx then added two tries off lineout drives, the second while Italy were a man short after Muhamed Hasa was shown a yellow card for a deliberate knock-on. Morne van den Berg crossed from the side of a ruck soon after Italy had stopped the first maul, and Siya Kolisi’s lineout try completed the bonus point. Six converted tries had the visitors 45-0 up just past the half-hour.

Italy’s lone reply

Italy’s only score came after the break. Federico Ruzza finished in the corner off a set-piece move, a rare moment of rhythm for the hosts. South Africa still added 21 points in the second half, with Ethan Hooker getting the ninth try late on, but the game turned scrappy as errors piled up and the replacements came on in waves.

Van den Berg took player of the match, according to Planet Rugby. Feinberg-Mngomezulu also found time for a 50:22 from his own exit, the kind of kick that tilts a field on its own.

France next

The schedule gives South Africa no time to admire the scoreline. They play France in Paris next Friday, then travel to Dublin to face Ireland on 21 November.
