Premier League: Iraola wants Liverpool to take more risks

A record nobody wanted

Liverpool are shooting plenty and scoring little, and Andoni Iraola has noticed. Ahead of Sunday’s trip to Crystal Palace, the manager said his side must give up some control to create better chances. Liverpool have scored just four goals in five home league games, their joint-fewest at this stage in club history, and they created the second-fewest big chances in the division.

Last weekend’s 1-0 loss to Arsenal made it worse. For the first time in over 440 home league games since Opta began recording the stat in 2003, they failed to put a shot on target at Anfield.

Volume without quality

Iraola’s diagnosis is simple. “We are one of the teams which arrives the most in the final third,” he said, but the chances are low in quality. Sky Sports’ analysis backs him up: 39 per cent of Liverpool’s shots come from outside the box, the fourth-highest share in the league, while only eight per cent come from inside the six-yard box. Arsenal sit at 17 per cent.

His fix is to send more bodies into the area. “It will take a little bit of control away, but it will give us more threat when we arrive,” he said.

Alexander Isak remains the bright spot. He has six of Liverpool’s 11 league goals and sits second behind Erling Haaland in the Golden Boot race. Iraola called him “a top goal scorer” and wants to feed him more. Palace host Liverpool on Sunday, kick-off at 2pm.
