Golf: DeChambeau faces November 15 call on DP World Tour

A deadline with real consequences

Bryson DeChambeau has nine days to decide whether the DP World Tour is his next home. After LIV Golf confirmed on November 5 that it will wind down and head for liquidation, the 2024 US Open champion must tell the Tour by November 15 if he wants 2027 membership. If he stays silent, he risks missing out altogether.

The arithmetic is unforgiving. His Pinehurst win earned a five-year exemption, but the rules strip a year from the end for every season a major champion does not take up membership. He skipped 2025 and 2026, so he has already lost 2028 and 2029. The 2027 season is still available, but only if he asks.

Few easy routes back

The PGA Tour has been consistent that former LIV players must serve a one-year suspension counted from their last LIV event. That means no one in the group is eligible before August 2027, and the January offer extended to four players, of whom only Brooks Koepka accepted, will not be repeated. The DP World Tour has become the most practical option for many.

Patrick Reed shows what that path can deliver. He left LIV in January, won in Dubai and Qatar, and sits second on the Race to Dubai, which should earn him one of the 10 PGA Tour cards on offer for 2027. Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton never gave up their memberships, while Lee Westwood and Paul Casey have career money list exemptions they could use. For Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson and Cameron Smith, the door is closed, and they would depend on invitations.

Three possible futures

DeChambeau is 33 and exempt for the next 12 majors, through the 2029 Open, with the US Open covered until 2034. He could follow Reed, build a schedule around content creation and the four majors, or step away. In August he said he would love to play PGA Tour events. LIV’s creditors committee meets on November 20 and a bankruptcy hearing is set for November 24, so the wider fallout is still unfolding.
