The run ends in the last 16
Mika Stojsavljevic could not follow up the biggest win of her young career. The 17-year-old from London lost 7-6(5), 6-4 to Turkey’s Zeynep Sonmez, the world No. 67, in the last 16 of the Hong Kong Open on Thursday. The match lasted a little over two hours.
It ends a run that began with almost no warning. Stojsavljevic got into the draw as a lucky loser with an hour’s notice, then beat former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin on Wednesday for her first WTA Tour win.

A ranking that moved anyway
She arrived in Hong Kong ranked 411th. The Kenin result lifted her to just outside the top 350 in the live rankings, a useful jump for a player still finding her place on the main tour.
The junior credentials are already there. In 2024 she became the first British girl in 15 years to win the US Open junior title, since Heather Watson in 2009. In April she made her Billie Jean King Cup debut for Great Britain against Australia in Melbourne and beat Talia Gibson, then ranked 36th, in straight sets.
Sonmez gets Liu next
Sonmez moves into the quarter-finals, where she plays Claire Liu, who knocked out Britain’s Katie Boulter. Sorana Cirstea is the top seed in Hong Kong and Alexandra Eala is seeded second. The tournament runs through Sunday, the same day the WTA Finals begin in Indian Wells.
