NHL: Beniers breaks free in overtime to beat Calgary

A steal, a pass, a breakaway

It took Seattle 55 seconds of overtime. Brandon Montour read a pass between the top of the circles in his own end and shovelled it ahead, Matty Beniers tracked it down just before the far blue line and went in alone. A low shot off the right post and in. The Kraken beat Calgary 2-1 on Wednesday night.

Seattle had been idle since a 6-2 loss in Calgary on Friday. Goalie Joey Daccord made 25 saves to keep it close.

A goal wiped out, then one that stood

The Flames scored first at 12:45 of the opening period. Morgan Frost fed Zach Whitecloud for a one-timer from the right point, and Yegor Sharangovich got a touch in the slot to send it between the legs of a screened Daccord.

Berkly Catton thought he had tied it two minutes later with a one-handed finish, but Calgary coach Ryan Huska challenged and the review showed him slightly offside. Catton got it back at 13:09 of the second, a wrist shot from the right dot on a 3-on-2 after a backhand pass from Mackie Samoskevich. It stretched his point streak to seven games, with three goals and five assists.

Debut and a post

Matthew Wood made his Kraken debut, three days after Seattle got him from Nashville in the Shane Wright trade. He skated on the second line at left wing with Frederick Gaudreau and Chandler Stephenson, and with about 13:30 left he drove to the net and lifted a shot that hit the crossbar.

For Calgary, Dustin Wolf stopped 27 of 29 shots in the team’s first overtime game of the season. The Flames are 7-3-1 since opening 0-5-0.
