Tennis: WTA Finals groups set, Rybakina and Sabalenka apart

Two groups, eight players, one new desert venue

The WTA Finals field now has its groups. The season-ending event lands in Indian Wells, California, for the first time and runs from 8 to 15 November. Top seed Elena Rybakina leads Group 1 with Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula and Linda Noskova. Aryna Sabalenka heads Group 2 alongside Mirra Andreeva, Elina Svitolina and Karolina Muchova.

The split keeps the two heavyweights apart until the final at the earliest. Rybakina arrives as world number one after ending Sabalenka’s 99-week reign, and she beat Sabalenka in both the Australian Open and US Open finals this year. She is also the defending champion, with a 49-14 record and three titles in 2026. Sabalenka sits at 47-10 with titles in Brisbane, Indian Wells and Miami.

Three debutantes and a seven-year gap

Andreeva, Muchova and Noskova all make their first appearance at the event. Andreeva won Roland Garros and owns 50 wins this season. Noskova is the reigning Wimbledon champion, with a 35-15 record. Svitolina is back after seven years away, and she won the title unbeaten in 2018. Pegula has reached five finals in 2026 and also has 50 wins.

Round-robin play runs from Sunday 8 to Friday 13 November, and the top two in each group go through. The semi-finals are on Saturday 14 November and the final on Sunday 15 November, with play starting at 8pm each day.
