Capsize in the Celtic Sea
Francis Joyon capsized on Monday afternoon in the Celtic Sea, with the Route du Rhum barely a day old. The 70-year-old skipper of the trimaran Oceans had led the Vintage Multi class for most of the opening stage, and had just handed the top spot to Damien Seguin (Arkea-Handicap International) when the boat went over.
Race organisers said Joyon was not injured. The Jobourg regional rescue centre, working with British authorities, launched an operation to reach him. Conditions on the scene were described as correct, with 20 to 25 knots of wind and two-metre waves.

A strong start undone
Joyon was heading north of the Azores. He had dominated the class through the first night and into the morning after Sunday’s start in Saint-Malo, where 115 boats in six classes crossed the line at 13:02 bound for Pointe-a-Pitre in Guadeloupe.
The veteran returned to the race this year as a former winner. He took the Ultim class in 2018 after a duel with Francois Gabart, crossing the Atlantic in 7 days, 14 hours, 21 minutes and 47 seconds. This is the 13th edition of the event, created in 1978 and run every four years.
