MLS: Messi late winner lifts Inter Miami to second in the East

Messi decides it after Berterame levels

New England had the lead, and for a while it held. Daniel Gazdag put the Revolution in front in the 53rd minute, and Inter Miami had to chase against a side riding a four-match winning streak. The answer came from the usual place.

German Berterame equalized in the 69th minute, with Lionel Messi credited with the assist. Fourteen minutes later Messi finished it himself, converting a Telasco Segovia pass in the 83rd for his MLS-leading 26th goal of the season.

A video review spares Miami

There was late drama. An apparent own goal in the 87th minute would have restored parity for New England, but video review ruled that Luca Langoni was offside and the goal was wiped out. Referee Sergii Boiko’s call stood.

A tight finish in the East

Inter Miami finished the night at 16-6-11 with 59 points, good for second in the Eastern Conference with one regular-season match left. It snapped a two-game winless run. New England sits on 58 points at 18-11-4 and drops behind Miami. It was the Revolution’s first loss of the season after leading or being tied at the 75th minute, and it ended their four-game winning streak.
