NFL football game action illustrating Patriots comeback win over Dolphins

NFL: Maye’s second-half burst flips Patriots past Dolphins

Maye goes 9 for 10 after the break

New England looked stuck at halftime in Miami, trailing 13-3 with its receiver room thin. Then Drake Maye took over. He finished 16 of 20 for 199 yards and two touchdowns, and nine of those completions, for 146 yards, came in the second half.

The first swing was a 43-yard touchdown to Kyle Williams in the third quarter that cut the gap to 13-10. Maye then ran in from two yards out to put the Patriots ahead 17-13. In the fourth quarter he found DeMario Douglas for 48 yards to make it 24-13.

It was his fifth straight game with at least three total touchdowns. He also matched a Patriots single-season record with a third game featuring two touchdown passes of 30 yards or more.

Miami threatens, then stalls

The Dolphins did not go quietly. Malik Willis hit Kevin Coleman Jr. from 35 yards to make it 24-19 with 2:04 left, but the two-point try failed. Kevin Byard III had already intercepted a deflected Willis pass, and Zane Gonzalez missed a 43-yard field goal with 6:41 to play.

Willis finished 21 of 32 for 211 yards, two touchdowns and an interception, though he was sacked five times in the first half alone.

What it means

New England moves to 5-3. Miami drops to 1-6. The Patriots won without A.J. Brown (ankle/knee) and had only four active receivers, and tight end Hunter Henry left early in the second quarter with a foot injury and did not return. Rhamondre Stevenson ran for 82 yards on 19 carries and Ollie Gordon II added 69 for Miami.
