NHL: McDavid hits 30 assists faster than Gretzky ever did

Thirty assists in 15 games

It took Connor McDavid 50 seconds to set the tone. He carried the puck the length of the ice, beat Rangers rookie Dylan Garand and had his ninth goal of the season. The record came later, in the second period, when his pass to Evan Bouchard on the power play at 9:49 became his 30th assist of the year. That is 30 in 15 games. Wayne Gretzky needed 16 to get there in 1984-85.

Edmonton won 4-1 at Madison Square Garden on Sunday night, and McDavid now has 39 points. He has recorded at least a point and at least an assist in every game this season, a 15-game run on both counts. Only once before has he opened a year with a points streak that long, and that one reached 17 games in 2021-22. The early goal was his eighth career goal inside the opening minute, which moves him past Mark Messier for the most in Oilers history.

A goalie back from the wilderness

Colton Dach scored twice, Bouchard added the power-play goal, and Leon Draisaitl chipped in two assists alongside Bouchard. In goal, Matt Tomkins stopped 27 shots in his first game for Edmonton and was named first star. It was only the seventh NHL appearance of his career and his first since April 17, 2024, when he was with Tampa Bay. Pavel Dorofeyev broke up the shutout with 6:38 left. A Bouchard goal was also wiped out for goalie interference not long after Dach’s first.

The Oilers are 7-0 on the road, equalling the best road start in franchise history, set by the 1983-84 team. New York has gone the other way. The Rangers have lost four in a row and sit at 1-5-1 in their last seven, with Garand making 21 saves in the loss.
