Pays doubles up as Montpellier cruise
Montpellier won 3-0 at Annecy on Saturday afternoon in matchday 11 of Ligue 2 and, for the moment, sit one point behind leaders Saint-Étienne. The leaders still have to play, away at Guingamp at 8 pm Paris time.
Laciné Megnan opened the scoring in the 24th minute and then set up Nicolas Pays, who scored twice, in the 44th and 63rd minutes. Annecy pushed back in patches. Striker Thibault Rambaud had chances in the 15th and 26th minutes, and Montpellier goalkeeper Simon Ngapandouetnbu denied Moïse Sahi Dion in the 31st.

The league’s best defence holds firm
That was the story of the game. Montpellier have the best defensive record in the division, and they defended with calm while their attackers hit on the counter. The visitors rarely trembled.
The result keeps Montpellier second and puts pressure on Saint-Étienne to answer in the evening.
