A scare that turned out to be a neck issue
Zach Hyman is on injured reserve. The Edmonton Oilers made the move Wednesday, and the forward will miss at least seven days, including tonight’s game against the visiting Calgary Flames.
It started Monday in Detroit. Red Wings defenseman Andreas Englund knocked Hyman into the boards in the second period, and Hyman’s head hit the glass on the way down. Edmonton lost 4-3 in a shootout, and nobody in the building was sure how bad it was.
The head coach said the team is playing it safe. The injury looked like a head problem at first. It turned out to be the neck, which the coach called “a real good thing” and described as a stiff neck.

A season that has barely started for him
Hyman, 33, has not had much of a runway this year. He missed the first six games with an upper-body injury, then played six, scoring once. He has a minus-1 rating, two penalty minutes and five hits in that stretch.
The track record is the reason Edmonton are being careful. He has 496 points in 717 regular-season games, 262 of them goals, plus 838 hits. He has played for the Oilers since 2021, after six seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs, and has 75 points in 106 playoff games.
The injury list is crowded. Edmonton hope forward Jason Dickinson comes off injured reserve and defenseman Mattias Ekholm, who is dealing with a concussion, is available against Calgary.
