Ligue 1: Marseille’s Adidas deal kicks in a year early

Puma out early, Adidas in

Marseille fans will see three stripes sooner than planned. L’Équipe reports that Adidas will become the club’s kit supplier from the 2027-28 season, a full year ahead of the schedule announced last summer. Puma, the club’s partner since 2018, was due to run until 2028.

The two brands settled the handover between themselves in recent days, with compensation involved. OM did not take part in those talks and has not responded to the paper’s requests for comment. Adidas plans to gather French staff in Marseille early next week to mark the start of the new era and is still looking for a manager to oversee the club account.

Why the rush, and the money

Jersey ranges usually need 18 to 24 months of design work, so Adidas now has to move fast. The reasoning for an early switch is simple: a supplier in its final contract year invests less, and shirt sales drop 20 to 25 percent as supporters wait for the next kit. One market source told L’Équipe that such deals are rare, citing Chelsea’s early move from Adidas to Nike in 2016-17.

The finances look better for Marseille. The Puma contract carried a fixed 16 million euros and a variable share that kept the total near 20 million a season. Several sources put the Adidas package above 30 million, in a range of 32 to 35 million.

It is also a homecoming. Adidas dressed OM from 1974 to 1994 and again from 1996 to 2018, including the night in Munich in May 1993.
