Kansas City turns to a familiar name
The Chiefs have signed kicker Justin Tucker to their practice squad, according to the Kansas City Star, with CBS Sports confirming the deal earlier today. No contract terms have been made public. Kansas City worked out three kickers this week and picked Tucker over former Rams kicker Harrison Mevis.
The timing is no accident. Harrison Butker has missed six kicks this season, one of them an extra point. In last Sunday’s 20-3 loss to the Seahawks he sent a 58-yard attempt wide at the end of the first half and missed from 45 yards in the fourth quarter. Andy Reid said afterwards that Butker is “off a bit” and has to fix it.

Butker’s numbers, Tucker’s résumé
Butker is 9 of 10 inside 50 yards this year but only 2 of 6 from 50 or beyond. Last season he went 28 of 30 inside 50 and 5 of 8 from long range. He remains the starter for now, though the signing sends a clear message.
Tucker is 36 and has not played since January 19, 2025, when he kicked for the Ravens. He has made 417 field goals at 89.1 percent, 14th on the all-time list, and holds a Super Bowl ring, seven Pro Bowl nods and eight All-Pro selections.
His absence has a cause. After The Baltimore Banner reported in January 2025 that women had accused him of misconduct at Baltimore-area spas, the Ravens released him in May. The NFL suspended him for the first 10 games of the 2025 season under its personal conduct policy, and he has not signed anywhere since, despite workouts with the Colts, Saints and Jets.
