A quarter century at the league office
Kathy Behrens is leaving the NBA after 26 years. The league told colleagues on Tuesday, and she plans to step away at the end of the year, the Associated Press reported.
Behrens ranks among the highest-ranking women ever to work in the league office. Since 2015 she has held the title of President of Social Responsibility and Player Programs, a job that put her in charge of how the NBA shows up off the court.
Commissioner Adam Silver called her run an “extraordinary NBA career.”

What she leaves behind
Her best-known creation is NBA Cares, the community outreach program that has stayed near the top of the league’s priority list for years. It is the kind of initiative that outlasts any single season.
During the pandemic, Behrens also oversaw the creation of the NBA Foundation and the National Basketball Social Justice Coalition. Both came together at a moment when players were pushing the league to do more on social issues, and both are still part of how the NBA talks about its role in the community.
No successor has been named in the reports so far. With a little over two months left on her calendar, the league has time to decide how it wants to fill a role that has grown a lot across her 11 years in the current post.
