A record-equalling night in London
Alexia Putellas has won the women’s Ballon d’Or for the third time, matching the record, at Monday night’s ceremony in London. The Spain midfielder is 32, and the award lands after one of the busiest years of her career.
She captained Barcelona to a quadruple last season, Champions League included, and finished with 26 goals and 15 assists for club and country. In May she closed out 14 years at the Camp Nou, the club’s second quadruple in three seasons, after reaching her 500th Barcelona appearance against Real Madrid in April.

The first Ballon d’Or winner from the WSL
What makes this one different is where she plays now. Putellas joined London City Lionesses in July, one of the biggest transfers the Women’s Super League has seen, and she becomes the first player from the English league to take the prize.
The numbers since the move are modest but steady: three goals and an assist in seven league games. London City, owned by Michele Kang, who also runs Washington Spirit and OL Lyonnes, sit third in the table on a five-game winning run. Only Manchester City and Chelsea have scored more since April.
Back to work on Sunday
There is no time to celebrate. London City host Manchester City on Sunday 1 November at 12:00 UK time, live on Sky Sports Premier League, with the new Ballon d’Or holder expected to lead the line. For a league that has long argued it can pull the world’s best players, a winner wearing a WSL shirt is the kind of proof it wanted.
