NFL game action, Dolphins beat Jets 28-25

NFL: Dolphins get off the mark, holding off Jets 28-25

Willis and Douglas end the winless run

The Miami Dolphins had one job on Sunday: avoid becoming the fifth team in franchise history to open 0-6. They did it, beating the New York Jets 28-25 at MetLife Stadium for their first win of the season.

Malik Willis set the tone. He threw a 7-yard touchdown to Caleb Douglas in the first quarter, then scrambled in from 2 yards in the second to push the lead to 21-7. His second touchdown pass to Douglas came in the fourth quarter, a 63-yarder that made it 28-17. Willis finished 14 of 21 for 208 yards and two scores. Douglas turned two catches into 70 yards and both of those touchdowns.

Miami also leaned on the ground. Ollie Gordon II carried 25 times for 103 yards and a 1-yard touchdown, and the Dolphins ran 41 times for 156 yards as a team. They held the ball for 34:40 and did not turn it over once.

Smith keeps the Jets in it

New York never went away. Geno Smith completed 23 of 30 passes for 287 yards and three touchdowns, finding Mason Taylor from 13 and 12 yards and Omar Cooper Jr. from 3. Cooper had five catches for 115 yards. After Douglas stretched the lead to 11, Smith hit Taylor again and then threw the two-point conversion to him as well, cutting the gap to 28-25.

The Jets actually out-gained Miami 377 yards to 360 and went 7 for 13 on third down. But they threw an interception, and Miami was 3 for 3 in the red zone. A 104-yard day on 17 carries from Allen did not change that.

What it means

Miami moves to 1-5 and had won 10 of the previous 12 meetings with New York. The Jets fall to 2-5 and are now 0-8 against AFC East opponents under coach Aaron Glenn.
