NFL: Manning not eyeing the Colts’ vacant GM job, ESPN reports

The obvious name is not biting

Peyton Manning is not expected to become the next general manager of the Indianapolis Colts, according to ESPN. The network’s sources say Manning has no interest in the job, and that the team has not approached him about it.

The reasoning is about time. Running an NFL front office would take far more hours than Manning wants to give while he juggles Omaha Productions, the Manningcast alternative broadcast with his brother Eli, and his commercial work. Manning said in 2024 that he was not focused on becoming a GM, and ESPN’s sources say that has not changed.

He is still open to NFL roles. They would likely have to be high-level positions of the kind held by Tom Brady, Matt Ryan and Tony Boselli, rather than a day-to-day football operations job.

What the Colts are looking at

Indianapolis fired Chris Ballard last week and is searching for a replacement. The timing is not kind. The Colts lost their last seven games of 2025 and started 2026 at 2-4.

Ballard leaves with a 72-82-1 regular-season record and a 1-2 mark in the playoffs. The team last reached the postseason in 2020 and won no AFC South titles in his eight full seasons.

The Manning link was always going to attract attention. The Colts drafted him first overall in 1998, and he played 13 seasons in Indianapolis, throwing for 54,828 yards and 399 touchdowns and leading the team to Super Bowl XLI. He was released after missing 2011 with neck and shoulder injuries, signed with Denver in 2012 and retired after the 2015 season as a Super Bowl 50 champion.
