NFL: McCaffrey leaves 49ers’ game at Atlanta with thigh injury

A first-quarter scare in Atlanta

Christian McCaffrey did not finish the first half. The 49ers running back hurt his left thigh in the opening quarter against the Falcons on Sunday, and the trainers spent a long moment on the leg before he jogged to the locker room for further examination.

San Francisco listed him as questionable to return. No update on the severity had come out when this was written, and there was no word from McCaffrey or the coaching staff.

He had already made his mark before leaving. McCaffrey caught three passes for 45 yards and carried four times for 29 yards, including a touchdown run.

Who carried the load without him

The 49ers did not wait around. McCaffrey sat out the entire third drive, and backup Kaelon Black finished it with a 30-yard rushing touchdown. That put San Francisco up 14-9 midway through the second quarter.

The injury matters beyond one game. McCaffrey is the hub of the San Francisco offense, both as a runner and as a receiver, and any extended absence would shift a lot of touches to Black and the rest of the backfield. Fantasy managers and anyone tracking player props will want the next injury report before settling on a plan for the coming week.
