Three gifts, three goals
Four days after conceding four at Como in the Champions League, Manchester United were supposed to respond at Old Trafford. They did the opposite. Bournemouth won 3-0 in Premier League Matchday 8, and United never looked like finding a way back.
The opener came from a lapse on United’s left. Rayan was left unmarked and rolled the ball in with his instep on 38 minutes. Five minutes later Leny Yoro, used at right-back, a role that has never suited him, slipped and lost possession, and Marcus Tavernier punished it (43rd). The third summed up the afternoon. Caught out by the wind, Senne Lammens misjudged his exit from goal and Evanilson tapped into an empty net (71st).
Going forward United offered almost nothing. Michael Carrick had left captain Bruno Fernandes on the bench after the midfielder’s public criticism of him, and the side that started looked short of ideas.

Carrick under real pressure
The numbers are grim. One win in eight league games leaves United 16th. Carrick had been under fire for weeks, and benching his captain, losing heavily at home and watching his team hand out three individual errors is hard to defend. L’Equipe reports his future could be decided within hours or days.
Bournemouth hardly had to be good. They only had to accept what United gave them.
Sage faces the same storm at Palace
Pierre Sage is in a similar spot at Crystal Palace, who lost 2-0 to Newcastle at Selhurst Park with four shots on target. William Osula scored just after the break from Jacob Murphy’s cross (47th) and Harvey Barnes doubled the lead from Armar Dedic’s pass (58th).
Palace are 17th with two wins and now own the league’s worst defence at 19 goals conceded. United and Palace sit next to each other in the table, and both managers are asking the same question about their jobs.
